81 Percent Say Nation On Wrong Track--Are Christians To Blame?

From Bill Wilson at the Daily Jot on April 4, 2008

Greetings in the Name of Him Who Is Truth!

A New York Times/CBS News poll indicates that 81% of Americans believe the nation has "pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track." In the poll, Americans blamed several things for their dim view of the country--the federal government, the weakening economy, terrorism, and the mortgage crisis. A full 70%, however, said that their personal financial situation was "fairly good" or "very good". What analysts are unlikely to figure out from such a poll is that Americans sense in their spirits that the nation is in dire circumstance, but so long as their pockets have enough money, that nagging feeling about the nation going in the wrong direction will never be addressed.
Americans are quick to blame the government for the woes of the nation. And they are focused primarily on the economy. But the government is the people. The people have elected and continue to support and elect immoral and unqualified leadership to government positions. Even though the people seem to understand that they don't approve of the job these elected officials are doing--the President's job approval rating is now 28% and Congress' is even lower at 20%--they keep putting them in positions of power. And, yes, America's leadership shoulders a good part of the blame for the condition of this nation as they are leading on a path of destruction. But a good look in the mirror settles the issue of who to blame.

In Deuteronomy 28, the Lord reveals the blessings unto a nation for following His commandments. He also warns of the curses of a nation that does not follow His commandments. Verse 63 says of the nation that does not follow the Lord's commandments, "And it shall come to pass, that as the Lord rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the Lord will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to naught." There is a progression of curses that the people go through by not following God's statutes. And the United States would appear to be well into the decline. Abortion, homosexuality, adultery, divorce, mental disorders, war from afar and others are all part of these curses.

Now Christians would argue that we are no longer under the curse of the law. To them, I say that they, too, shoulder the blame for the condition of our nation. Whether we are under the curse or not has no bearing. It is that law gave people and nations guidelines on how to live a good life. And as Christ died to bring us out of the curse of the law, the law then should be etched on the flesh of our hearts that we would want to live as God commanded. The condition of our nation can be blamed on all who know the truth, but allow the lie. And if we don't start behaving as the head rather than like the tail, the fate of our nation is already written in Deuteronomy.

Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!
